Corgis needed to help crown King and Queen of Pitt Park at Jubilee celebrations

An East Belfast community group are appealing for help to source a couple of corgis dogs to help with their Platinum Jubilee celebrations next week.

The Pitt Park Residents Association will be holding a special funday in Dr Pitt Park on Friday, June 3, to celebrate the Queen's 70th anniversary on the throne.

It will see a range of events taking place on the day including an afternoon tea for the elderly in the community and a barbecue and disco in the evening.

As part of the celebrations they will be inviting members of the community to dress in royal attire for a pageant they will be holding in order to crown King and Queen of Pitt Park, with the group appealing for help to find a couple of corgis dogs to join them in their coronation.

The jubilee celebrations will be the first full funded event that the residents association have organised after forming just over a year ago.

Speaking to Belfast Live, Maureen Greer, said: "We are very excited to hold are first fully funded event in Pitt Park to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee this year.

"We are expecting around 400 people to attend on the day which will be full of fun and games to bring the community together on this historic occasion.

"There will be a special afternoon tea or the elderly in our community starting at 2pm, with a local singer who will be serenading them with traditional songs, followed by our barbecue and disco for our young people and those young at heart.

"The highlight of the event will be our pageant to crown King and Queen of Pitt Park, where we are inviting everyone who wants to take part to come dressed in their best royal attire, with the winners being crowned at the end of the day.

"In order to make the coronation extra special we are hoping to source two corgis dogs and possibly a horse and carriage who would be able to attend on the day and would be very grateful to anyone who could donate their time."

The event has been support by the The National Lottery Community Fund, Belfast City Council and the East Belfast Mission, who have helped the group secure funding in order to put on the community funday.

The Pitt Park Residents Association is now in its second year and formed with the aim of promoting the positive aspects of the community which had become overshadowed by trouble in the area.

Jackie Upton said: "We formed this group as a way of showing that there are a lot of positive and good things taking place within the Pitt Park community which very often goes overlooked.

"We held our first self-funded event last summer which proved to be very successful and gave a real boost to everyone living here.

"Moving forward we want to continue promoting the community for the better and would like to give a special thanks to Lianne at the East Belfast Mission for her support in our Jubilee celebrations along with The National Lottery Community Fund and Belfast City Council."
