Cops launch probe after car deliberately torched in Lanarkshire street causing another to catch fire

An investigation has been launched after a car was deliberately set on fire in a Lanarkshire street while nearby locals attended a fireworks display.

Police have launched an appeal following the incident which took place on Saturday evening, November 5.

Officers say a white Mercedes was set alight and another car, a white Kia which was parked next to it, also caught fire from the initial blaze.

Fire crews were seen racing to the scene at around 7.45pm on Bonfire Night in the Macrius Way area of Motherwell.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service put out the inferno and no one was injured.

It's understood the area was particularly busy around this time as locals visited Strathclyde Park for its annual fireworks display.

And cops are now urging members of the public to assist in their investigation as they wish to speak to a young man who was spotted at the time.

Detective Constable Graeme Stoddart told Lanarkshire Live : “We are keen to speak to a male youth seen in the area at the time wearing a blue tracksuit.

“The area was busy at the time of this incident as people had been attending the fireworks display at Strathclyde Park so I am asking anyone driving in the area to check their dash-cam to see if there is anything that could assist with our enquiries.

“In addition, anyone in the area that has private CCTV images that might help with our investigation is also asked to get in touch.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101.

Information can be left anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
