Cops carry out tactical manoeuvre to halt Golf driver in Fife car chase drama

Police in Fife were forced to use a tactical stop manoeuvre to bring the driver of a Volkswagen to a stop following a car chase, after they say he refused to pull over.

Traffic cops carrying out a routine patrol on the A92 in Glenrothes say they tried to flag down the white VW Golf at around 9pm on Thursday July 21. When the driver - a 35-year-old man - refused to stop, police began a pursuit with other vehicles joining in to provide backup.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said "tactical contact" was used to bring the runaway hatchback to a halt, with no injuries reported. Images shared on social media showed the car at a standstill parked at an angle to the road on the Bankhead Roundabout, with a police car immediately to its right.

Two other police cars and two police vans were also involved in the stop. Police swooped on the car after it was pulled over and arrested the 35-year-old driver in connection with theft and road traffic offences.

A passenger in the car, a 20-year-old man, has also been arrested in connection with weapon and drugs offences. Police were keen to stress that the incident was resolved safely.

However, the police vehicle involved in the stop is understood to have incurred damage in the process of carrying out the manoeuvre.

A force spokesperson said: “Around 9pm on Thursday, 21 July, officers carrying out routine patrols on the A92 attempted to pull over a white VW Golf. The car failed to stop, a pursuit ensued and tactical contact was used to bring it to a safe conclusion with no injuries.

"The driver of the car, a 35-year-old man, has been arrested in connection with theft and road traffic offences. The 20-year-old male passenger was arrested in connection with being in possession of an offensive weapon and drugs offences.

"Both will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal."
