Cops called to stop Lanarkshire school kids brawling in the street

Police had to be called as Lanarkshire school pupils brawled in the street on Wednesday.

The youngsters were captured on social media footage fighting along Stonelaw Road in Rutherglen in front of shocked onlookers.

Some clips that circulated online show one pupil being stomped on as he lay on the ground, while another clip showed girls grabbing at each other's hair.

Other footage shows the pupils, believed to attend different schools, throwing punches.

Cops have now confirmed there will be a heavier police presence around local schools in the coming days.

One local parent told us : "It's getting really out of hand again.

"There's real trouble taking place between different schools - it's like gangs are back again."

A Police Scotland spokeswoman told Lanarkshire Live : “Around 12.50pm on Wednesday, January 19, police received a report of a disturbance in the Stonelaw Road area of Rutherglen.

"A number of pupils were returned to their respective schools and enquiries into the circumstances remain ongoing.

"There will be an increased police presence in the area over the coming days."

We recently told how local police were aiming to step up patrols on Rutherglen Main Street due to the amount of incidents occurring there, many involving teenagers.

South Lanarkshire Council's head of education, Anne Donaldson, said: “We are aware of an incident that happened outside school at lunchtime on Wednesday.

“School staff reacted quickly and played an active part in intervening to de-escalate the incident.

"Police attended and are carrying out enquiries.

“High schools continue to work in partnership with the police, pupils and the community to promote positive behaviour and personal safety when out and about at lunchtime and to report any concerns they may have."
