Copponi bosses cycling rivals to win women's classic

French sprinter Clara Copponi has finished like a boss, winning the women's Tour Down Under classic.

Her Lidl Trek team kept her out of sight until the end of the 90km circuit race and Copponi convincingly took out the bunch finish.

Copponi theatrically folded her arms, smiled and nodded for emphasis as she crossed the line.

Australian teammate Amanda Spratt had predicted on race eve that Copponi would win.

Australian Georgia Baker was second, unable to capitalise on a power of work from her Liv AlUla Jayco team through the 20-lap race on Sunday in the Adelaide parklands.

Liv AlUla Jayco, the only Australian team in the WorldTour peloton, were predictably active throughout the race.

Baker's teammate Amber Pate, who dominated the Australian criterium title earlier this month, joined Italian Greta Marturano (UAE) in a break midway, that lasted until about 15km left.

American star Chloe Dygert then sent a massive scare through the peloton when she went on one of her trademark charges on Montefiore Hill, during the second-last lap.

Italian Rachele Barbieri (Picnic PostNL) went with her and Liv AlUla Jayco led the reaction, closing them down early on the last lap.

Barbieri finished third and Dygert was fourth.

Dygert, active throughout the Santos Women's Tour, won the third and final stage at Stirling last week with a solo charge at the finish.

The one-day classic is a new event this year at the Santos Tour as organisers steadily build the women's race.

The three-day women's Tour Down Under was held from January 17-19.

The same circuit was being used for the last stage of the men's tour on Sunday afternoon.
