Copenhagen tipped to be the next big holiday destination for 2023

Copenhagen is tipped to be one of the big holiday destinations of 2023.

A recent survey by American Express Travel found that the Danish Capital is top of most people's bucket lists for 2023, beating out the likes of Mexico City and Fiji's Yakuve Island.

As well as being one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the world, Copenhagen is bristling with energy and has a unique mix of modern cultural intrigue and a fascinating past.

For people living in Europe it is a brilliant place to visit as its very accessible by both train and plane, and has plenty of residents more than happy and able to speak English.

We take a look at some of the best things to see and do in Copenhagen...

The National Museum of Denmark

This is Denmark’s largest cultural and historical museum and hosts a variety of exhibitions from Egyptian mummies to the prehistoric Sun Chariot.

It also tells the deeper story of a country beyond its intriguing Viking history.

The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek

Vikings. Bicycles. Tall men in turtle necks. Carlsberg.

These are probably the four things that come to mind when you think of Denmark.

Visitors to the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek learn about the renowned brewing magnate Carl Jacobsen, the producer of Carlsberg beer who was also a great patron of the city.

The building was founded in 1888 and nowadays is home to the largest collection of Ancient Mediterranean art and French impressionist paintings in Denmark.

It also has a beautiful sub-tropical winter garden with tall palm trees, a fountain and fish pool.

Tivoli Gardens

Sitting right in the centre of the city and filled with tall objects encrusted with flashing lights, it's hard to miss Tivoli Gardens.

The theme park opened on 15 August 1843 and is the third-oldest operating amusement park in the world.

What better way to spend a frosty Danish evening than eating a traditional open sandwich and downing a litre of beer at one of the park's cafes, before finding out exactly how strong your stomach is on one of Tivoli's many rides.

Christianborg Palace

The palace sits on Slotsholmen island, is surrounded by canals, and houses the Danish parliament, prime minister and Supreme Court.

Expect opulent interiors, colourful art work, sparkling chandeliers and jaw-dropping architecture.

Nyhavn

Translated as New Harbour in English, the row of colourful houses that sits along the waterside form what is probably the most recognisable spot in Denmark.

They are also home to many a great restaurant and bar, serving delicious traditional food as well as frothy beer in a relaxed, divey atmosphere.

A great way to learn about the area's history is via one of the many walking tours on offer.

Cycling

More than 50% of the population commute to work by bicycle and Copenhagen’s ambition is to be carbon-neutral by 2025.

All of that peddling has had a big impact on the way the city feels and is structured, with many well built cycle lanes making getting around by bike feel safe - even if you're on the wrong side of the road.

The city has an excellent cycle hire scheme while electric bikes are easy to get hold of from one of the many rental shops.

Copenhagen is a big city with more than two million residents, so two wheels are a great way to get around it.
