A police officer was left fighting for his life after he was pinned by a metal gate in a freak accident at a school.
Oklahoma Deputy Jeremy McCain was attempting to pull of out Oklahoma Christian School's car park at around 7pm last Friday when he suddenly crashed into a security gate which entered the car and trapped him inside.
The dad-of-one was driving "less than 10 miles per hour" when he suffered "severe crushing injuries" after being pinned against the metal gate.
Police said an off-duty doctor helped save the cop's life after he “happened to be at the right place at the right time.”
Oklahoma County Sheriff Tommie Johnson III revealed the officer died three times on Friday night and needed 60 units of blood.
He said: “Jeremy died three times Friday night: The first at the scene, when he was revived by bystanders and Edmond Police; the second time at the ER, when doctors opened him up and manually massaged his heart for 10-minutes; and a third time during surgery."
The Sheriff admitted "it is truly a miracle that he is still with us" after the officer's horrific injuries.
"They began to massage his heart for 10 minutes," Mr Johnson said. "I mean, how big is it when the doctors come out and explain to me the shape he was in and said they had to massage his heart for 10 minutes just to keep him alive."
Mr McCain, who has spent nearly 11 years with the force, has reportedly not suffered any brain damage from the tragic accident but has a broken neck.
Police confirmed nobody was at fault for the incident - with his family wanting to stress it was a freak accident.
Mr Johnson said: "I’ve been to the scene myself. I’ve seen it. Sometimes bad things just happen and this is one of the things. Nobody’s at fault, there’s no negligence. It’s just an accident we wish we never had to speak about.
"But unfortunately, we’re here. The family wanted to stress, we wanted to stress, nobody is at fault.”
The single dad's seven-year-old boy gave him his favourite toy to hold in hospital as he makes his recovery.
Mr McCain has been upgraded from a critical condition to a stable condition, according to authorities.
