Cooper Kupp still day-to-day, won’t play until he can ‘return to performance’

The Rams took it slow with Cooper Kupp’s hamstring injury when it occurred last month, and even after giving him plenty of time to return, he still suffered a setback – a frequent occurrence with soft-tissue injuries.

Now, Kupp is on the verge of missing Sunday’s opener against the Seahawks and the Rams aren’t in any hurry to rush him back. Sean McVay provided an update on Monday and said Kupp remains day-to-day as he visits with a specialist in Minnesota.

McVay expects to have more clarity on Kupp’s status Wednesday but he won’t play the wide receiver until he can “return to performance,” not just return to play.

“I think the most important thing is that whenever he’s ready to take the field, whether that be this week, whether that be Week 2. Whatever it is, as long as he’s able to have that return to performance, he’s feeling like the Cooper Kupp that we all know and love and he’s got some clarity on what is really going on, I think that will be a really good situation for us,” McVay said.

Kupp is the No. 1 receiver and the top weapon in the Rams offense, so they need him healthy for as many games this season as possible. If that means taking a cautious approach and sitting Kupp for the next three weeks, that’s something they should consider.

It’s a 17-game season and they’d much rather have him for the last 14 games than rush him back for Week 1 and have him suffer another setback that causes him to miss two months.
