Coombe Hospital forced to close room after 'vermin' spotted

Vermin sightings forced the Coombe Hospital to close one of their shower rooms,

The Hospital has spent over €20,000 in their fight against vermin, with rodents, ants, wasps and flies all spotted, information released to Newstalk revealed.. Sinn Fein's Health spokesperson David Cullinane told Newstalk that “there’s a responsibility on management to ensure that the problem is brought under control”, adding that it was concerning that a room had to be closed.

“The cost is significant but it is a problem that has to be dealt with,” he said. “Everything that can be done, has to be done.”

The Hospital said that the shower room they were forced to close was decontaminated, deep cleaned and tested by their Infection Prevention and Control team. “Reported sightings often take place out of hours,” they said.

“There are then often no sightings at the time of the callout by the pest control technician. The area would still be treated as an affected area because of the reported sighting by using preventative measures.

"This involves strategically placing traps and/or bait boxes. No rooms in theatre have been closed during this timeframe.

"Routine calls are part of the planned preventative maintenance. Follow-up calls are made after an initial treatment to monitor activity usually following a call out or post-routine inspection if activity was noticed. Call outs are initiated in response to reported activity.”

Dublin Live has contacted the Hospital and the HSE for further comment.
