Tinder has barred a convicted rapist who trawls online dating sites for company after his crimes were reported to the popular hook up app.
Brian Davey, from Bangor, Co Down fled to Scotland in 2020 after being “ordered out” of Ireland.
Now living in Glasgow, he has been advertising on Tinder for “a nurse” to look after him, claiming to have Covid-19 quarantine with a broken leg, Belfast Live reports.
Seven years ago Davey wept at Belfast Crown Court when he was found guilty of a raping a student twice.
On leaving HMP Maghaberry he turned to a number of churches in Northern Ireland and was supported by local families in “his new life”.
He was given help to find work as a painter and decorator and he attended Christian socials and prayer and counselling sessions.
But in 2018 Belfast Live exposed the double rapist of using Tinder to try to hook up with unsuspecting women.
Then 27, his profile on the dating app described him as “an easy going guy looking for the same”. The post added that he likes “food, cinema, sport and music”.
He ramped up his appearances on dating sites including Tinder, Plenty of Fish and others.
And after being told of paramilitary threats against him, he moved to the Republic of Ireland.
Davey stayed under the radar for 18 months but in January of this year he was discovered to be in Co Meath.
He had picked up work in a factory and continued his social media charm offensive while also chatting up women in bars with a sob story of wanting a new start and needing to make friends.
He “tracked down” one woman on social media and encouraged her to connect with him on WhatsApp but once again she closed down contact after a friend checked him out and discovered his criminal history.
Davey had rented a room in a home for £200 a month and was provided with lodgings and food.
He was “ordered out” of Ashbourne, Co Meath and with nowhere to turn on either side of the Irish border, he moved to Scotland.
And he was back on Tinder with an old photo and a new profile using the name ‘Stew’ and describing himself as an “Irish man stuck in quarantine”.
The profile continues: “Broken leg is a nightmare. Need a nurse. Jokes lol.”
One woman who saw his profile, reported him to Tinder and to Police Scotland. It is understood the account has now been removed.
A spokesperson for Tinder said: “The safety of our members is our top priority and we take this matter very seriously. If someone is reported for committing a crime, they will be removed from our platform, and our team will always work with law enforcement, where possible, to protect our members.
“We advise our community of millions of members to be vigilant, report any suspicious activity and to read through our safety tips available online and through the app.”
