A Texas man with a history of criminal offenses has been arrested after allegedly breaking into a Houston home and stabbing his 58-year-old mother during a robbery attempt. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon when Joseph Anthony Abreu, 35, forced his way into the residence and demanded his mother's wallet. When she refused, Abreu pushed her and proceeded to stab her.
Following the attack, Abreu fled the scene but was apprehended by authorities the next day. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
Abreu, a convicted felon, now faces charges of aggravated assault of a family member and burglary with intent to commit another felony. This is not the first time Abreu has had a brush with the law.
Records show that in 2015, he was convicted of prostitution with multiple prior offenses in Harris County. In a separate incident in 2021, Abreu attempted to purchase a firearm from a retail store, despite being prohibited from possessing one as a felon under Texas law.
During the attempted purchase, Abreu made concerning remarks to the store clerk, prompting the authorities to intervene. He later pleaded guilty to attempted possession of a firearm by a felon and received a four-year sentence in the Texas Department of Corrections.
Currently held in the Harris County Jail on a combined bond of $202,500, Abreu is scheduled to appear in court for his recent charges. The case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of criminal behavior and the importance of upholding firearm laws to ensure public safety.
