Joe Alwyn’s South Dublin accent was slated on Twitter last night following the Conversations with Friends' RTE premiere.
Taylor Swift’s Beau, who plays Nick Conway in the Sally Rooney series, is originally from Kent in England.
So when he attempted a posh Dublin accent, fans were quick to label it as “painful” and even as a “hate crime”.

One said: “Not really sure what Joe Alwyn’s accent is doing in #ConversationswithFriends but it’s like he’s auditioning to be a Hemsworth brother. Was there not a single Irish actor available?”
Another added: “Do people really find this Joe Alwyn man attractive? And what’s with the Australian accent?”
A third said: “Please can someone confirm whether Joe Alwyn is attempting an Irish accent in conversations with friends. I can’t tell and it’s breaking my brain.”
Another posted: “I love Joe Alwyn to his bones but I’m seven episodes into Conversations with Friends and I cannot for the life of me tell if he’s trying to do a Dublin accent or not."
Someone else tweeted: “Joe Alwyn’s attempt at an Irish accent is an offence to my ears."
A final person said: “Joe Alwyn speaking in that stupid f*cking deep gravelly voice to mask the fact that he can't do an Irish accent GOD.”
Meanwhile others defended the actor hailing his portrayal of the character.
One said: “Don’t agree with criticism of Joe Alwyn’s accent. It’s very realistic for where Nick lives, the fact Melissa is from the UK/US, they travel, his profession. I’m Irish born/bred.
“Never had a thick accent and I live in the UK now. My accent is like Nick’s."
Another tweeted: “Ok finally getting around to watching conversations with friends and I actually don’t think Joe Alwyn’s accent is that bad?"
Someone else posted: “Pitch idea for a new @calm Sleep Stories narrator - Joe Alwyn with his beautiful deep voice putting on an Irish accent.
“Sorry to the Irish if he doesn’t sound authentic but I am all in!”
