Controversial SATs test left pupils in tears - try the English test for 10-year-olds

The SATs week has come to a close for Year 6 pupils, but things have run far from smoothly.

With many professionals and parents already criticising the tests for 10 and 11 year olds, one headteacher's account of how much Wednesday's English paper affected her pupils has added fuel to the fire.

Kerry Forrester, head of Tarporley C of E Primary School in Tarporley, Cheshire, said youngsters were in tears over the reading test, which many have said was much harder than in previous years.

After writing a letter to her MP calling for the assessments to be scrapped, she then shared it online and was inundated with messages of support.

Hundreds of M.E.N. readers also reacted with fury to the tests, saying their children - even those working at greater depth - had come home crying because they'd struggled so much with it.

The government has defended the “challenging” tests.

Last year's reading paper, which is said to be much easier, is available online, if you fancy your chances with it.

Children were given a 12-page booklet to read about three different subjects - The Parsnips girls football team, an interview with a circus performer and a story titled A Traveller in Time - before answering questions about the texts in another 20-page booklet.

They had an hour to answer the questions and were told to read one text and answer the relevant questions before moving onto the next.

Questions range from ordering the correct sequence of events from a text, to multiple choice and matching characters to descriptions.

But if you want to try your hand at something a bit quicker, see how you get on with last year's grammar test.
