Controversial camogie All-Star tour cancelled after player pushback

The proposed PWC Camogie All-Star Tour of Canada has been cancelled.

The timing of the proposed trip, which have honoured All-Star winners of the 2021 and 2022 seasons, had been widely criticised by players.

Scheduled to take place between May 19-25, the tour would have ended just a week before the beginning of the All-Ireland camogie championship.

Shortly after the date of the proposed tour was made public, seven Cork stars announced that they would be boycotting the tour as it's proximity to the Munster Championship would hamper their county's preparation.

Players from Kilkenny, Galway and Waterford who had been due to feature on the tour, all followed suit and adopted a similar position.

Following extensive discussions between relevant parties, during which alternative dates are believed to have been proposed, the decision was made to cancel the tour.

It is understood that the camogie association has informed the counties involved of its decision.

The timing of the tour was controversial from the get go. Scheduled to take place between May 19th-25th, the tour would have ended just eight days prior to commencement of the provincial championships at the beginning of June.

Back in February Cork star Ashling Thompson, who won an All-Ireland with the Rebels in 2021 before finishing runners-up to Kilkenny a year later, told the Irish Examiner that going on the tour would have been akin to abandoning her Cork teammates.

“How could you expect seven players to turn their back on their teammates at probably the most important time of the year leading up to championship? We wouldn't have All-Stars only for our teammates,” she said at the time.

Thompson also took to Twitter to express further concerns over the timing of the tour and how it would impact the intercounty season.

Fellow Cork star Saoirse McCarthy echoed Thompson's sentiments earlier this month saying, "The timing of this trip is wrong."

"The most important part of the season is preparing for our Munster and All-Ireland campaigns.

"We wouldn't have All-Stars without our teammates!"

The cancelled tour would have seen the All-Star side play a match hosted by Canadian GAA on May 21st.

Attention can now turn to the All-Ireland Camogie Championship which gets underway on the weekend of June 3rd/4th, the draw for which has yet to be made.
