According to Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson, the team and his representatives have begin the process of contract negotiations to keep Wilson with the Steelers. Wilson is set to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
Wilson shared this information during his appearance on the “The Pat McAfee Show” this week.
“We have been starting to talk a little bit,” Wilson said. “We had meetings and everything else, and (we’re) getting into it. It’s an exciting time.”
Wilson started the final 11 games of the 2024 season, going 6-5. Wilson and the Steelers lost their final four games of the regular season and their first-round playoff game. But despite that, it sounds as though the Steelers are interested in bringing Wilson back if the price is right. Pittsburgh paid him the veteran minimum this season.
One thing these negotiations could indicate is that the Steelers aren’t going to try to work out a new contract with Justin Fields. After joining the Steelers last offseason, Fields went 4-2 as a starter before being benched in favor of Wilson. It’s highly unlikely that Fields wants to return to Pittsburgh without assurances that he will be the starting quarterback.
