They may be closed due to coronavirus restrictions, but some of Canberra's playgrounds are set for an upgrade.
Constructions has begun on new nature play spaces at existing playgrounds such as Kambah adventure playground with work on a new space at Yerrabi Pond District Park to also begin in coming weeks.
The new play spaces will include natural elements such as rocks, log steppers along with percussion instruments and totem poles for outdoor play.
Logs will be recycled from infrastructure projects across Canberra to create new tunnels.
ACT City Services Minister Chris Steel said construction was set to be completed by July.
"We know that Canberra children and families have been missing the opportunity to explore Canberra's over 500 playgrounds with the space being closed due to the pandemic," Mr Steel said.
"We hope when children return and restrictions are lifted, children can enjoy the new and upgraded play spaces across the ACT."
Work has already begun on designs for new play spaces in Richardson, Waramanga, Torrens, Narrabundah and Higgins, after contracts were signed for their construction.
It comes as 30 playgrounds across Canberra will get a refresh with extra work happening as part of the government's stimulus plan to revitalise communal spaces.
The refreshes will include extra seating, shade and new equipment as well as repairs to soft fall and play equipment.
"The ACT government is committed to supporting local business and keeping people in work during this difficult time," Mr Steel said.
"These projects will help create jobs while ensuring Canberra's kids have a range of play opportunities in suburbs close to them."
