Conservative MP Penny Mordaunt announces she is standing to become the next party leader

Conservative MP Penny Mordaunt has announced she is standing to become the next party leader and prime minister.

The Portsmouth North MP and international trade minister announced her bid for the leadership on Sunday morning.

In a video promoting her candidacy, she said: “Our leadership has to change. It needs to become a little less about the leader and a lot more about the ship.”

It comes after Sajid Javid, Jeremy Hunt, Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi and Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced they were throwing their hat in the ring yesterday.

On Thursday, Boris Johnson announced he would be resigning as Prime Minister following growing pressure for him to go. In the speech, which was met with applause from supporters, Mr Johnson said it was now clear ‘there should be a new Prime Minister’. He said he will remain in place until a new leader takes over.
