A conservative congressman from Tennessee, Rep. Andy Ogles, is making headlines as the state holds primary elections. Ogles, a member of the House Freedom Caucus and a vocal critic of President Biden, is seeking re-election in Tennessee's 5th Congressional District. He faces a primary challenge from Nashville councilwoman Courtney Johnston.
Ogles gained attention for filing articles of impeachment against Vice President Kamala Harris, both last year and again after she became the Democratic nominee. Despite facing controversies in the past, Ogles has the support of former President Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and Sen. Bill Hagerty.
Johnston, on the other hand, criticizes Ogles as a 'do-nothing grandstander' embroiled in scandals. She is backed by establishment Republicans like former Sens. Bill Frist and Bob Corker, as well as former Gov. Bill Haslam. The winner of the GOP primary will go up against Democrat Maryam Abolfazli in the general election.
Meanwhile, Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn is favored in her bid for re-election, facing a primary challenge from Tres Wittum. The Democratic Senate nomination is also contested in a crowded field.
Additionally, there are primaries for state Senate and House seats in Tennessee, where Republicans hold strong majorities in the predominantly red state.
