Conor McMenamin recalled to Northern Ireland squad after IFA U-turn

Conor McMenamin has travelled with the Northern Ireland squad to Greece for Tuesday's Nations League game after he was reinstated to the international panel.

The Glentoran forward was axed from the squad before Saturday's win at home to Kosovo "in light of a historic social media video" according to the IFA

However, McMenamin could now play in Greece for Ian Baraclough's men after the Irish FA reviewed the decision and offered him a reprieve.

A video re-emerged in recent days of the winger appearing to join in with a pro-IRA chant.

But considering the video was taken almost a decade ago and the fact McMenamin was punished by his club at the time, the IFA have performed a U-turn.

McMenamin had been the second player to be withdrawn from the squad in two days after Kilmarnock striker Kyle Lafferty was removed on Friday after an investigation by his club into an alleged sectarian remark.

Northern Ireland went on to beat Kosovo 2-1 on Saturday at Windsor Park thanks to a late Josh Magennis winner.

Speaking after the game, Baraclough said: "It is a distraction you would rather not have. And to happen so close to kick-off time.

"I thought we did the right thing in pulling Conor out of the squad. It needs to be looked at. Clearly it is an historical video on social media from when he was 16 I think.

"I am not sure where it is going to go at this time."

McMenamin has earned three caps to date and was expected to feature in the games against Kosovo and Greece.

The Irish FA said in a statement earlier in the day: “In light of an historic social media video which has been circulated, Northern Ireland senior men’s team player Conor McMenamin has been withdrawn from the squad.”
