Conor McGregor smokes weed while teasing trilogy fight with UFC rival Nate Diaz

Conor McGregor has insisted he will complete his trilogy with Nate Diaz after he "buries" Dustin Poirier as the Irishman launched into a tirade while smoking cannabis in Amsterdam.

The UFC superstar is out of action after breaking his leg against Poirier last July, but is eyeing a return for 2023 after continuing his rehabilitation. McGregor has piled on the pounds since being away from competition, and is expected to make a comeback at 170lb which would open the door to a third fight with Diaz.

The Stockton native has been dismissive of a third meeting with McGregor but could open the door to a fight particularly if it is organised outside of the UFC after his contract expired. Diaz decided to jump in and have his say on McGregor's recent outburst aimed at Dustin Poirier, tweeting: "You both get knocked out all the time."

McGregor then responded before deleting the posts, writing: "You too but just for the weed, we build a weed company. F*** the p*** sauce I gave that tick at the press conference. Not even a thanks. He is going in a box, and me and you are going in a hot box for the knock haha. I’m in Amsterdam like Sadam rocking round Iran haha. Van Dam chop his head quick. Must."

He later added: "Public translate: I’m fighting you too. But I will bury him quick first. Way handier fight/her knickers/More recent story line etc. If he bottles it, it’s you. I’m also in Amsterdam, weed's great, and I’m not a bad guy I’m just a great martial arts actor with boat loads of money."

It is not the first time McGregor has been smoking a joint this year, with fans previously slamming his "embarrassing" video which saw him lighting one up on his luxury super yacht. The Irishman is currently holidaying with friends in the Dutch capital, which is his latest destination having spent time in Ibiza and Rome this year.

A third contest with Diaz has been on the lips of UFC fans for several years and would represent a realistic opponent for McGregor if he is hoping to kickstart a revival at 170lb. The American's contract has now expired with the promotion, and his long-term rival sent him a congratulations message before stating the third showdown will happen.

McGregor and his arch rival could even meet in the boxing ring where Diaz is hoping to make a success of himself in the coming year. And UFC legend Michael Bisping believes the pair should endeavour to make a third fight outside of a UFC contract.

He told BT Sport : "I don't know the status of his [McGregor's UFC] contract, but he's under contract. Until he's a free agent, they [McGregor and Diaz] can't entertain putting on their own promotion because I'm sure that's what they're thinking. Conor and Nate do it together. Nate has probably got a great team. They could go off and do their own fight. Make it a mega-fight and split the pot, take it all to themselves."
