Conor McGregor offers to foot €500,000 bill for Katie Taylor fight

Conor McGregor has offered to pay the €500,000 fee required for Katie Taylor to fight in Croke Park.

Organisers revealed last week that the highly anticipated rematch between the Olympic champion and Amanda Serrano would not take place at the GAA headquarters. Promoter Eddie Hearn admitted that the decision was a "frustrating" one but said that the costs associated with the venue were too high.

The match is still set to take place in Ireland on 20 May, with the 3Arena a likely candidate to host the sporting event. However, Conor McGregor has revealed he is willing to pay the huge bill to ensure Katie's homecoming fight goes ahead in Croke Park.

Conor wrote on Twitter: "The extra security bill is 500k to have Katie Taylor fight at Croke Park? I will sponsor the event to see this happen."

His comments quickly began trending on social media, following wide-scale disappointment about the Croke Park decision. Promoter Eddie Hearn also was quick to respond to the generous offer, suggesting that the two "should talk" in a Twitter reply.

The Irish Mirror previously reported that security costs in Croke Park would cost three times the amount associated with a match in Wembley Stadium. The historic Dublin venue could host approximately 80,000 boxing fans if selected for the rematch.

Boxing fans supported Conor's offer and urged Eddie Hearn to accept a potential deal. Others pointed out that Katie should have a say in the negotiations.

One person wrote: "C'mon Eddie Hearn sort the deal out. Nobody creates an atmosphere like the Irish and a sold out Croke Park would be the best event you've ever put on. Fair play Conor."

Another Twitter user argued: "I think the actual fighter, aka Katie Taylor, should have a say in this. Maybe she doesn't want to be sponsored by, or associated with McGregor."

Katie Taylor previously squared off against fellow lightweight boxer Amanda Serrano in Madison Square Gardens, New York City. The match took place last May and was dubbed as the largest women's boxing event in history.
