Conor McGregor offered new UFC role as star prepares for comeback

Conor McGregor has been offered a chance to coach on the latest series of the UFC's The Ultimate Fighter.

The Irishman broke his leg in defeat to Dustin Poirier in July 2021 but has now resumed full training ahead of a potential return to competition this year. Despite his significant decline in form in recent years, McGregor remains the biggest pay-per-view draw in the sport and arguably the biggest star on the roster.

He currently has two fights remaining on his current deal and is expected to continue his UFC career in pursuit of a shot at becoming a three-weight champion with a win at 170lb. However as fans eagerly await news of his comebacj, McGregor has claimed he has received an offer to take to the coaching side of MMA.

He wrote on Instagram: “This is a snap from the original ultimate fighter house. Where I coached vs Urijah Faber. This photo was just before the show though. It was right before I won my first world title beating Urijah's teammate Chad Mendes around. I then went on to coach the famous fight show straight after the fight.

"With a big black eye and a gash, my tricolour, and my new and first ever UFC gold belt, I waltzed into the notorious fight gym in Las Vegas. The slickest suits and shouts the show had ever seen before. On top of the silverware. And I coached my team to victory. Crazy. Some journey. I have just been offered to coach this role again. I like it. It is full immersion which is needed. I see fighters lining up. I know what is ahead I been ready motherf******s. #StayReady."

McGregor featured on the 2015 version of the UFC's popular show but did not fight in it as normally planned against his opposite number Faber. It was one of the most popular seasons of the coaching event, and it continued to put the Irishman on the map ahead of his world title win over Mendes.

It remains unclear who could be in the opposing corner for any news series but many have suggested it could be Michael Chandler who has repeatedly stated his intentions of meeting McGregor inside the cage. Fans have even claimed a showdown with Jorge Masvidal would be huge for the show and leading into a potential pay-per-view mega fight.

'Gamebred' previously claimed he was open to the contest and plans to pick up a devastating win. “He is false. He knows that I am a man who hits hard and that I come to kill. I do not come to hug in the cage,” Masvidal told ESPN Deportes. “I am going to give everything inside me to kill him.

"I have a little size but he is still a little boy. I would love to fight at 170 pounds, but I don’t wait for anyone. If he wants to do it, I’ll break his face. If he doesn’t want to do it, let someone come next."
