Conor McGregor interested in buying Liverpool despite being Man Utd fan

Conor McGregor has declared he is interested in buying Liverpool with owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) looking to sell the club.

The American owners of the Premier League giants issued a statement confirming they are looking for investors after news broke that they have put together a full presentation in a bid to sell to interested parties. The club's top brass have retained Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley to assist with the process of selling the club.

And UFC megastar McGregor has wasted no time in throwing his hat in the ring, declaring he would love to buy the Anfield club - despite being a fan of arch rivals Manchester United.

In response to a tweet asking him to buy the Anfield club, McGregor replied: "I WOULD LOVE IT! I requested my information on this, yes. Soon as I heard. What a turn of events! What a club!"

McGregor has been pictured in a Manchester United shirt many times and has discussed his support of the Old Trafford club. During a FIFA Q&A in 2019, McGregor declared: “I was more a player than a watcher back then, but Manchester United was my team.

"It was only the other day I came across an old picture of myself wearing that infamous grey United jersey, which I bought with my [First Holy] Communion money at eight years of age. I see my son when I look at that photo. I’d love to know where it is now. A truly ‘Notorious’ football jersey!

“I was attracted to the success and winning mentality of the club and people surrounded by United. Irish legends like Denis Irwin and Roy Keane were dedicated to their craft and had that winning mentality. Roy Keane was one of the best midfielders European football has ever seen. Opponents would be mentally beaten before they’d even stepped on to the pitch to face him."

Conor McGregor has previously shared that he is a Man Utd fan (Instagram)

Despite his comments on United, McGregor did also suggest he supports Liverpool prior to last year's Champions League final.

"You know, my family are Liverpool, I'm a supporter of Liverpool," McGregor said before the game. "I'm a supporter of Real Madrid also. I hope for a great game but I'll have to go with the pool [Liverpool] for this one, I'll have to go for the pool."

If McGregor is serious about buying Liverpool, then he faces paying a huge price with current owners FSG looking for £4billion to sell the club.

Earlier this year, he voiced similar interest in buying Chelsea before they were purchased by a Todd Boehly-led consortium. "I wish to explore this, Chelsea " in response to a picture of a WhatsApp message from an unknown contact which read: "Chelsea for sale, £3bn. Let's buy it".

McGregor, who is worth around £135million, has previously shown an interest in buying his beloved United, tweeting last year: "Hey guys, I’m thinking about buying Manchester United! What do you think?"

More realistic buyers for Liverpool are emerging, however, with reports in the Middle East that Dubai investors who attempted to purchase the club in 2007 are keen on relaunching a new bid. It is understood the Reds owners have been approached by at least one potential buyer. However, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has ruled out a takeover bid as he focuses on the Ligue 1 side he owns, Nice.
