Conor McGregor helps to keep SBG Portarlington gym open

Conor McGregor has stepped in to help keep an Irish gym open after the Covid-19 pandemic forced them to close their doors.

The Notorious has helped rescue SBG gym in Portarlington after owner Philip Mulpeter announced on Friday that they were to close down.

The Bellator and long-time John Kavanagh fighter owns the Laois gym, and took to Instagram to announce their closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

But after the announcement, his team-mate and SBG Ireland fighter stepped in to keep the gym open with his financial backing.

In an emotional Instagram post yesterday, SBG Portarlington said: "From the lowest low to the highest high. WE ARE NOT CLOSING!!

“Our team-mate and friend Conor McGregor has decided to help us out and keep the gym running. We will be eternally grateful.

“To everyone that messaged and got in touch with us to show your support, thank you all so much. See you all on the mats.”

And McGregor responded: "Let’s go SBG Portarlington!".

McGregor made the generous move as he steps up his preparations for a UFC return at a Portugal training camp.

He fights old rival Dustin Poirier at UFC 257 on January 23, and is targeting a run at a potentially vacant UFC lightweight title in the coming months.
