Conor McGregor given "no respect" from rival's coach after coronavirus outburst

UFC star Conor McGregor has been given "no respect" by rival coach Javier Mendez after comments he made about Khabib Nurmagomedov 's father.

Nurmagomedov's father Abdulmanap passed away in July 2020 after a lengthy battle with Covid-19, with Nurmagoedov later retiring from fighting because of the tragedy.

Following Dustin Poirier 's win over McGregor in their trilogy fight, Nurmagomedov congratulated the American on his win by writing: "Good always defeats evil". McGregor then took aim at his rival's father by replying: "Covid is good and father is evil?"

McGregor had also claimed Nurmagomedov was using his father's Covid-19 diagnosis as a "cover up" to avoid a fight with longtime rival Tony Ferguson. "I figured it was all just a cover up about Abdulmanap. A cover up to hide the lack of activity and the pulling out of fights and running away. Good luck but remember - Allah sees all," he wrote.

American Kickboxing Academy head coach Mendez, who has trained fighters such as Nurmagomedov, Daniel Cormier and Cain Velasquez, explained why doesn't care for McGregor following his comments about Abdulmanap. "I don't like Conor. I don't care for him and the reason why I don't care for him is, he made those comments regard the Covid situation, he told Submission Radio.

"Any man that makes comments like that, I'm sorry, you're not gonna get my appreciation for you because the whole world suffered. Whether you were joking, whether you're not, you made those comments and to me. I just have zero respect for that for anybody that would say what he did."

Cormier also echoed the words of Mendez when speaking shortly after McGregor posted the tweet about Abdulmanap. "I get shock value and I get trying to get people to talk but way too far. To the point that I immediately called Khabib last night and said, ‘Are you ok?’ Honestly, when Conor does stuff like that, it’s hard to understand how there’s still this mass amount of people that support that type of behaviour. I feel like from him talking about Poirier's wife to now Khabib’s father, he is just taking it way too far," he said.

Former two-weight champion McGregor is currently taking time outside of the cage to continue his rehabilitation after breaking his leg against Poirier last July. The Irishman, who recently completed filming in the Dominican Republic for his Hollywood debut, has called for a welterweight title shot upon his return in the hopes of becoming the first three-weight UFC champion.
