Conor McGregor compared to Muhammad Ali ahead of Dustin Poirier rematch

Conor McGregor's boxing coach Phil Sutcliffe has paid the Irishman the ultimate tribute - by comparing him to the legendary Muhammad Ali.

Sutcliffe took McGregor under his wing at the age of just 12 before The Notorious turned his hand towards MMA.

But the two have linked up again recently, with Sutcliffe forming part of McGregor's training team.

On January 23 McGregor will return to the Octagon for the first time since his devastating win over Donald Cerrone last year as he takes on American Dustin Poirier for a second time.

And speaking to TheMacLife ahead of the bout, Sutcliffe stated his belief that there are similarities between McGregor and the man most consider the greatest fighter ever in Ali.

"I tell most of our boxers, learn how to read, learn how to see the shots coming. He has that with fine art," Sutcliffe said.

"He’s the Muhammad Ali of the UFC. He always had the ability to not get hit and reading the punches even as a child.

"He is able to move his head, bob, weave, and the work ethic of him is unbelievable."

McGregor knocked out Poirier in the first round when the two first fought in 2014.

And Sutcliffe can't see past another victory - and has warned McGregor is even better now than he was then.

"Conor will be able to get his shots or his kicks or anything in there like he did the last time," he added.

"Now hopefully he’s more powerful now than he was – Conor’s more powerful now and so the other guy will be a little more powerful because he’s had to put on a bit of weight.

"But Conor’s skill’s percentage towards Poirier’s skill percentage is much bigger.

"Not saying it’s going to be an easy fight, but Conor has the skill and the strength now.

"He’s stronger now than he was the last time he fought him.

"Conor hits very, very hard, but precise with technique. He hits with precision."
