Conor McGregor compared to Britney Spears as UFC fans fear star is “spiralling”

Conor McGregor's fans have compared him to infamous pop star Britney Spears after a series of Instagram messages left them concerned that he was "spiralling".

The legendary former two-weight UFC champion has been out of action since July of last year, but has managed to stay in the headlines through a series of increasingly strange outbursts. He has become infamous for his 'tweet and delete' sprees on social media, and last night posted a series of photographs and videos to Instagram which have now been taken down.

He could be seen posing with a new watch in many of the pictures, as well as showing off his Rolex and comparing it to other types of watches. However, fans didn't think the posts were all that impressive, instead expressing concern that the Irishman may be struggling since taking an extended break from competition due to injury.

Some fans asked why McGregor had his hand on his neck in some photos, with one writing "Why are you choking yourself my brother?" Another asked "bruv, are you okay?" And one fan joked that watching McGregor's recent social media activity is "like watching Britney Spears spiral".

In the mid-2000s, Grammy Award-winner Spears suffered a number of very public struggles after years around the entertainment business. She infamously shaved her head before being put under a conservatorship in 2008 due to her ongoing issues, which fans are now comparing to McGregor's recent tirades.

The fighter is currently celebrating Christmas with his family, but appears to believe that he will begin working towards a UFC comeback in February next year. He has put on a considerable amount of muscle, and is believed to weigh in the region of 195lb as he looks to return at welterweight with a bigger frame.

However, he has hindered his fan support in his home country with a series of controversies, most notably a public spat with comedian PJ Gallagher and legendary football player Paul McGrath. Both Gallagher and McGrath are almost universally beloved in Ireland, and McGregor has not endeared himself to fans with social media outbursts at the pair.

First, the UFC star mocked Gallagher over his struggles with mental health issues over the past few years, which caused McGrath to tweet in support of the radio host. And McGregor then went on the offensive with the footballer, making fun of his battle with alcoholism in a series of now-deleted messages.
