Conor McGregor and Jorge Masvidal backed for BMF clash amid UFC losing streaks

Retired UFC star Michael Bisping has backed a fight between Conor McGregor Jorge Masvidal for the BMF belt.

McGregor and Masvidal have struggled to display the best versions of themselves in the octagon and are both without a win in over two years. Former two-weight champion McGregor lost consecutive fights to bitter rival Dustin Poirier last year whilst Masvidal recently suffered his third consecutive loss when he was outpointed by Colby Covington at UFC 272.

Masvidal has been called to defend his 'BMF' title since winning it against Nate Diaz, but UFC boss Dana White has played down the possibility of McGregor competing for it by stating 'Gamebred' is "too big" for the Irishman. And Bisping explained why McGregor's best fighting days are behind him whilst discussing a potential match-up between the two UFC stars.

"McGregor vs Masvidal, it kind of makes sense right now doesn't it," he told Mirror Fighting. "Masvidal's lost three in a row, McGregor is kind of similar. His best days are behind him that's the way it goes, fighting is tough as you don't always remain on top.

"McGregor had an unbelievable rise, he was a two-weight division champion. He set the world on fire and made massive amounts of money. When you reach that position there's only one way to go down and that's down.

McGregor and Masvidal first butted heads when 'Gamebred' wore a Versace robe to UFC 244 in 2019, the same robe McGregor had shown off before his 2017 crossover fight with Floyd Mayweather.

The UFC stars have been tipped to fight ever since, but McGregor returned to 155-pounds after a 40-second knockout win at welterweight against Donald Cerrone in 2020. Bisping thinks McGregor will be unable to ever top the success he had in the UFC, as he became the first fighter to hold belts in two different weight classes simultaneously.

"You can't go up any f****** higher and that's not an insult," he continued. You can't maintain that position for very long. In terms of a matchup it makes sense. McGregor's been doing a lot of biceps and triceps [work] so he's warming up to welterweight these days and Masvidal's lost three in a row."

McGregor has bulked to 190lbs after being limited to weight training since breaking his tibia against Poirier last July. 'Notorious' has hinted a return at welterweight when he returns to the octagon later this year.
