Conor McGregor accuses Floyd Mayweather of breaking rematch agreement after boxing fight

Conor McGregor has claimed Floyd Mayweather broke a verbal agreement for the pair to have a rematch in the cage.

McGregor fought in arguably the most high-profile outing of his career when he made the switch to the boxing ring and lost to legend Mayweather in 2017. It was a huge event around the world and sold the second highest number of pay-per-views in combat sports history, which naturally led to talks of a rematch.

More recently speculation was fuelled that the pair were in talks to stage a rematch in the boxing ring, but after Mayweather confirmed negotiations it appears they have now died down. Despite no new agreement being reached, McGregor has suggested he is still open to doing battle with the retired star again before the end of his career.

"That was the original," McGregor said during an interview on Fox Sports when discussing if a rematch was discussed after his boxing clash with Mayweather. "It was a verbal agreement, I box him, and he fights me. But you know, he didn't honour it. He didn't honour it yet. Who knows?

"I would go against him in another boxing bout, I'd like another crack at it. "I can always say it is another boxing fight and then just bend the rules a little bit when we're in there maybe."

After making a huge £100million purse for his outing in the boxing ring, McGregor has always left open the door to a potential return particularly given his original background in the sport. Ultimately he was unable to make a dent on Mayweather who reached his 50-0 record with the win over the UFC fighter.

Both men remain in fighting action which could still signal the possibility of a sequel, with McGregor currently preparing for his UFC comeback fight against Michael Chandler as part of the promotion's latest series of The Ultimate Fighter. And although Mayweather is no longer fighting as a professional, he remains in the ring and is fighting in exhibition fights which have included against YouTube stars Deji and Logan Paul.

When a report emerged that the pair were likely back in talks over another boxing fight, Mayweather even suggested that he would be open to another professional bout with his record on the line. "It could be me and Conor McGregor in 2023. We don't know if it's going to be an exhibition of a real fight. But there's been talks of both. I would prefer an exhibition," Mayweather told the Daily Mail last year.

"I am not into fights where I am going to take any real punishment. So, guys like Conor McGregor and guys that don't really hit hard such as YouTubers or UFC guys, I don't really mind colliding with those kinds of individuals but nothing where I am going to put myself in a position where I am going to harm myself or hurt myself."
