Conor Coady takes aim at 'daft' Liverpool question and makes James Tarkowski Everton admission

Conor Coady has spoken of his frustration at being asked about his Liverpool past and the joy he felt when he netted in the recent Merseyside derby.

Everton played out a 0-0 draw against Liverpool at Goodison Park at the start of the month. Both Jordan Pickford and Alisson Becker produced a string of saves over the course of the 90 minutes to keep the scores level.

However, in the second half, Everton did think they had taken the lead when Neal Maupay's cross was tapped in at the back post by Coady. But the incident went to VAR and was then disallowed for offside, but only after the centre-back had wildy celebrated what he thought was his first goal for the Blues.

And even though the 29-year-old is a lifelong Red, and a graduate of Liverpool’s Academy system, Coady admits netting against Jurgen Klopp’s side was one of the best feelings of his career.

“A lot of people ask me about scoring against Liverpool and to be honest, I think it is a daft question,” he told Sportsmail.

“I have played football for a long time now and the one thing I give to any club I am playing for is everything every single day of my life. I’ll push that club and try to make the people around me better.”

Coady then added: “I know how big Merseyside derbies are, I grew up with them, I know what they are about, I know how big they are for Everton Football Club and we spoke about it before that game. It is a massive game for Evertonians, a massive game for the manager and the players.

“So, to have that feeling at the time [when the ball hit the back of the net], bearing in mind it got taken away, it was one of the best feelings I ever had in football, I’ll be honest. I am giving my all for that club every single day.”

Coady joined Everton from Wolves in the summer, and the move came a couple of months after James Tarkowski also joined the club. The pair have immediately taken up leadership roles in Frank Lampard’s squad, with the duo also playing a key role in Everton heading into the international break with the second best defensive record in the Premier League.

“He is someone I have known throughout my time in football. We are similar in age; I have played against him a lot when he was at Burnley,” Coady said on his partnership with the former Burnley man.

“I knew before going to Everton how good a defender he was but I also learned what a fantastic person he is, someone who is outstanding for the dressing room and the club.

“He is a real pleasure to be around. I enjoy playing with him and spending time with him every day. He is a fantastic footballer as well. We keep on pushing each other as much as we possibly can.”
