Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr discuss potential fight in backstage encounter

Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr discussed a potential fight during a backstage encounter which Eubank Jr feared might "kick off".

The pair are currently pursuing their own world title routes with Benn fighting at welterweight while Eubank Jr is eyeing a shot at the middleweight crown. A natural rivalry has emerged after their fathers shared the ring in 1990 with Eubank getting the nod in their opening encounter, before a historic sequel ended in a split-decision draw.

Eubank Jr admitted the pair initially spoke about Canelo Alvarez's recent defeat by Dmitry Bivol, before smirking after realising the money the pair could make if they shared the ring. Eubank told iFL TV : “We had a little chat. I think they set it up, someone sneakily set it up.

“Unbelievable that we were both backstage, both presenting awards at the exact same time. And that sports awards, whoever manages that, they’re lucky that I’m not an idiot. He asked me about the Canelo fight, it was small talk.

“He was talking to someone else for a second and I was thinking about all the stuff that’s been said over the past couple of months and I started laughing. He said, ‘What are you smirking about?’ I said, ‘Listen, me and you can make a lot of money in the future.’

"He said on the fight that he comes in 20lbs heavier than what he weighs in at. He was basically trying to say that he could physically fight, the weight difference wouldn’t be an issue. I mean, he is a hothead. It could’ve easily kicked off at the awards show, right before we were about to walk on stage.”

A feud has started to simmer which stems from their father's legacies, with the legends having failed to stage a trilogy fight despite holding one of the biggest rivalries in the history of British boxing. However with their sons making their own journeys in the boxing ring, the responsibility could be on the young pair to rekindle a clash in the ring.

Neither fighter has found an opponent for their next fight with Eubank Jr calling out the likes of Gennady Golovkin and Kell Brook. Meanwhile Benn is focused on positioning himself for a title shot next year and is eyeing a shot against Keith Thurman.

Benn's promoter Hearn is open to discussing the possibility of a future meeting. Hearn told iFL TV : “Conor is a fighter, so he wants all these fights now. So when he starts talking about Eubank, he’d probably fight Eubank at 160lb.

“So, don’t f*** it up and do something stupid because the money is unbelievable. It’s a massive money fight. I don’t know Eubank in terms of his weight. He’s tight at 160lb, but it’s how far can you come down? For me and ultimately it’s Conor’s decision, but for me, I wouldn’t want that fight over 154lb."
