Connor Ronan believes the only way is up for the Buddies now they’re rocking in a brand new formation.
St Mirren’s 11-game winless streak before the winter break appears to have been put firmly to bed after the Paisley club sealed their third win on the bounce since the turn of the year.
Ronan kept up his fine personal scoring record against Aberdeen on Tuesday night, with his rocket of a winner his third strike against the Pittodrie club in as many matches.
The Saints upturn in form appears to be linked to their move from a back three to a back four, with Jim Goodwin’s side looking much more balanced in their last three outings as well as posing more of an attacking threat.
And Ronan wants to see more of the same from his teammates as they look to make it four victories on the spin when they travel north to face Dundee at Dens Park on Saturday.
Ronan told Express Sport: “The first thing the gaffer said after the break was to forget last year and to start again this year afresh.
“Obviously we had a good run at the start of the season and dropped off a bit towards Christmas.
“But the gaffer told us to start afresh after Christmas and we all felt that.
“There’s been a change of formation and style of play and we’ve all bought into that during training.
“It’s been working well and hopefully we can keep doing that.
“Personally I want to get my performances back to where they were at the start of the season and hopefully this is the start of that.
“We’ve just got to keep taking each game as it comes and keep picking up as many wins as possible.
“The table is in the back of our minds. We just need to try to stay on an undefeated run.”
Saints manager Goodwin was quick to tout Wolves loanee Ronan for a spot in the Ireland national team following his match-winning strike against the Dons.
Ronan admits he’d love to follow in teammate and compatriot Jamie McGrath’s footsteps, but is fully focused on shining for the Buddies before that dream becomes a reality.
He said: “It (a call up) is probably at the back of my mind.
“First and foremost you’ve always got to focus on your club football, because that’s what’s going to get you in there.
“I’m just taking each game as it comes and hopefully chipping in with a few more goals and assists. That won’t do me any harm.
“I’ll just keep getting on with things and taking one game at a time.
“It gives me a lot of confidence seeing what Jamie has done, playing in this league.
“He had a really good season last year and has got in the squad, played in big games and kept his place in the squad.
“That’s only going to give me confidence to try and do the same.”
