Connor Goldson urged to become Rangers Iron Man and get 'suit of armour' on to get through Celtic showdown

Rangers legend Ally McCoist has demanded Connor Goldson start for his former club in the semi-final against Celtic on Sunday.

The Light Blues vice-captain missed the game against Aberdeen last Sunday through injury where the Dons ran out 2-0 winners thanks to goals from on-loan Celtic defender Liam Scales and striker Bojan Miovski. Goldson has been a mainstay in Michael Beale's team since he arrived at Ibrox and has good relationship with former Liverpool centre-back Ben Davies at the heart of the defence. Davies was criticised by pundits and fans for his performance against Barry Robson's men, while John Souttar also didn't put in his best display.

McCoist wants boss Michael Beale to play Goldson no matter what his injury status is and joked that he "needs to get a suit of armour on" if Rangers are to have any chance of beat Ange Postecoglou's side on Sunday afternoon. McCoist told the Scottish Football Extra show on BT: "He's got to be fit. I'll tell you right now, even if he's not fit, he's got to be fit. Michael Beale has got to wheel him out, I don't care what kind of nick he's in.

"He needs to take injections, he needs to get a suit of armour on - he has to go out and play this game. Whether he goes for Ben Davies or John Souttar, I'm not sure."

Asked who would play alongside him if he does make it, McCoist added: "Probably Souttar to tell you the truth but Ben Davies looks a far more controlled centre-back with Goldson alongside him.

"That's the importance and effect that Goldson has on others."
