Connexin connects first customer as new full fibre broadband network is rolled out in Hull

Digital infrastructure specialist Connexin has successfully connected the first customer to the new full-fibre network it is creating in Hull.

The major milestone in the roll-out comes as it aims to break the region’s broadband monopoly, going up against KCom.

Launched last September, it will be one of the first in Europe to be built over an existing full-fibre network as the incumbent provider’s infrastructure isn’t shared.

Furqan Alamgir, founder and chief executive of Connexin, said: “Connecting the first customer to our new full-fibre network is not just a momentous occasion for Connexin, but also for Hull and East Riding. It signals the beginning of the end of the region’s broadband monopoly and the introduction of choice for people, bringing real change to the area.

“We have exciting things planned and as we continue to roll-out the network, which will be the fastest across the region, we can’t wait to welcome more customers and to provide homes and businesses with access to ultra and hyper fast broadband at a competitive price, with superior customer service.”

MS3 is also developing in the city, with both having received major backing from new investors since KCom was bought out.

Whitehelm Capital Partners injected £80 million into Connexin.

Emma Page, a healthcare worker from East Hull, has become the first user of the new 10 Gbps, full-fibre network.

As part of the celebration she was presented with six months free access.

Emma said: “We’re really pleased with our new connection, we’re saving over £20 a month by switching to Connexin. Plus, my kids are always gaming or online so the boost in speed has been fantastic. It’s been really reliable and the customer service has been spot on. I definitely recommend Connexin Fibre, I'm glad we finally have a choice!”

Founded in Hull in 2006, Connexin specialises in building and operating award-winning smart city infrastructure to support the Internet of Things, with major projects rolled out in Hull, Newcastle and Sheffield, as well as with Yorkshire Water.

It was named one of the Top 100 Fastest-Growing Technology Companies in the Northern Tech Awards.
