Congresswoman Ramirez Calls For More Support At The Border

U.S. President Biden delivers remarks on healthcare coverage and the economy, in Washington

Democratic Congresswoman Delia Ramirez of Illinois emphasized the need for increased support and staffing at the border to address the influx of migrants attempting to cross into the United States illegally. As a vice ranking member in Homeland Security, Ramirez highlighted the importance of creating more legal pathways for migrants and enhancing resources in countries like Panama to provide protections and reduce transit pressures.

Ramirez criticized the Republican party for politicizing the border situation and stressed the urgency of implementing comprehensive immigration reform. She pointed out the lack of progress in immigration policy since 1986 and underscored the humanitarian crisis unfolding at the southern border.

Expressing concern over the current asylum process, Ramirez highlighted the challenges faced by migrants in accessing legal representation and demonstrating credible fear within tight timeframes. She cited instances of individuals, including those with serious health conditions like malaria, seeking refuge and assistance.

Advocating for a holistic approach, Ramirez called for strengthening relationships with countries like Panama, enhancing infrastructure at ports of entry, and addressing root causes such as corruption and violence driving migration. She criticized restrictive measures that fail to address the underlying issues and urged for a more compassionate and effective response.

In response to questions about the Biden administration's stance on asylum seekers, Ramirez emphasized the importance of upholding the country's values as a nation of immigrants. She called for a shift towards policies that align with President Biden's commitment to welcoming those seeking asylum and addressing the complex challenges faced by migrants.

While acknowledging the complexities of the border situation, Ramirez underscored the need for immediate action and bipartisan cooperation to address the humanitarian crisis and implement sustainable solutions. She highlighted the urgency of providing adequate staffing, resources, and legal pathways to ensure a more humane and effective response to the ongoing challenges at the border.
