Congresswoman Lofgren Criticizes Ex-President's Threats And Misinformation

Donald Trump to testify in New York civil fraud trial

Democratic Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren responded to former President Trump's recent comments suggesting that she and other committee members should be indicted by emphasizing the constitutional protections afforded to members of Congress. Lofgren pointed out that Article I, Section 6 of the Constitution shields legislators from prosecution for performing their legislative duties.

She defended the committee's work, stating that they have referred relevant matters to the Department of Justice and made evidence publicly available. Lofgren dismissed Trump's threats of arrest, highlighting the legal processes required for such actions, including the need for probable cause and grand jury indictments.

Addressing Trump's claims of information deletion by the committee, Lofgren unequivocally stated that no information was deleted, labeling such accusations as baseless.

Regarding Steve Bannon's refusal to testify before the committee, Lofgren expressed frustration at the lack of cooperation and emphasized the importance of understanding Bannon's role in the events leading up to January 6th. She highlighted Bannon's podcast statements predicting unrest and the communication between him, Roger Stone, and the White House.

Concerning the broader trend of Trump allies advocating for the use of legal mechanisms against political opponents, Lofgren criticized her colleagues for perpetuating such rhetoric. She warned against undermining the rule of law and the Constitution, emphasizing the dangerous implications of politicizing law enforcement.

Lofgren concluded by condemning the erosion of constitutional principles and the rule of law, particularly on a day like D-Day when Americans reflect on historical sacrifices. She characterized the rhetoric aimed at targeting political adversaries as disgraceful and detrimental to the foundations of American democracy.
