Congresswoman Condemns Colleagues' Cuba Trip, Calls For Accountability

Maliotakis condemns Congress members visiting Cuba as anti-American and communist sympathizers.

New York Congresswoman Nicole Maliotakis recently expressed strong criticism towards fellow members of Congress who visited Cuba, labeling them as anti-American and communist sympathizers. Maliotakis highlighted the troubling nature of these visits, pointing out that Cuba is a state sponsor of terrorism and aligns itself with adversarial nations such as Iran, North Korea, China, and Russia. She emphasized that Cuba allows these countries to operate spy bases near U.S. shores and has harbored fugitives and terrorists.

Maliotakis underscored the hypocrisy of these Congress members advocating for fair wages in the U.S. while supporting a government that pays its citizens a mere $15 a month. She also pointed out that these same members voted against resolutions supporting the Cuban people during their protests for freedom in 2020.

As the daughter of a Cuban immigrant, Maliotakis shared a personal connection to the issue, highlighting the hardships faced by Cuban families and the oppressive conditions under the communist regime. She condemned the regime's human rights abuses, including the lack of basic necessities, poor healthcare, and the imprisonment and torture of peaceful protesters, including children.

Responding to comments made by Congressman Carlos Gimenez, who also criticized the visits to Cuba, Maliotakis echoed his sentiments and emphasized the importance of standing with the Cuban people against the oppressive regime. She expressed agreement with calls for Congress members who visited Cuba to remain there, given their apparent support for a regime that violates human rights and aligns with U.S. adversaries.
