Congressman warns of Putin's intentions in Ukraine, calls for aid

U.S. Senate votes on bipartisan border security bill that would also provide aid to Ukraine and Israel, in Washington

Congressman Adam Smith, the ranking member on the House Armed Services Committee, has expressed concerns about the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. In a recent interview, Congressman Smith stated that Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, is determined to take as much of Ukraine as he can. He believes that Putin will continue his aggression unless faced with strong opposition.

According to Congressman Smith, Putin views himself as the victor in this conflict and is unlikely to halt his advances in Ukraine. The congressman expressed the urgent need to provide aid to Ukraine in order to prevent further aggression. He emphasized that if Ukraine is not supported militarily, it will become increasingly difficult for the country to maintain its sovereignty and democratic values.

While acknowledging that Russia has made gains in eastern Ukraine and along the southern border, Congressman Smith emphasized that this situation could not be viewed as a long-term victory for Putin. He noted that Russia's military capabilities have been significantly undermined and that their standing in the world has suffered as a result of their actions in Ukraine.

Congressman Smith stressed the importance of a sovereign and democratic Ukraine, stating that the country should exist in its 1991 borders. However, he recognized the current challenges and highlighted the need to at least maintain Ukraine's sovereignty in the face of Russian aggression.

The congressman called for immediate military support for Ukraine to help them counter Russian advances. He expressed concern that without such support, Ukraine's ability to resist further aggression would be compromised, and the prospects for a peaceful negotiation would grow dimmer.

The conflict between Ukraine and Russia has been ongoing since Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014. Despite efforts to negotiate a peaceful resolution, tensions remain high, with continued fighting in eastern Ukraine and periodic escalations in violence.

International actors, including the United States, have condemned Russia's actions and imposed economic sanctions to exert pressure. The provision of military aid to Ukraine has also been an important aspect of Western support to counterbalance Russian aggression.

The statements made by Congressman Smith highlight the urgent need for continued support to Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. The conflict not only poses a threat to Ukraine's sovereignty but also has broader implications for regional stability and international norms. As the situation unfolds, it is crucial for the international community to remain engaged and work towards a lasting and peaceful resolution.
