Congressman Turner warns of urgent national security threat involving space

President Biden addresses White House Climate Initiative in Washington

The Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Congressman Mike Turner, has issued a urgent warning about a new national security threat that requires immediate attention. Turner and other members of the 'gang of eight' are scheduled to meet with National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan to discuss the matter. However, Turner has called on the White House to declassify the information so that all members of Congress can review it before the meeting.

Sources indicate that the threat is related to space, and there have been reports on the hill suggesting that it involves an emerging capability from Russia. While the seriousness of the threat is considered grave, it is not believed to be immediate. Turner has stressed the importance of sharing this information with Congress, emphasizing the need for robust discussions with allies and partners.

Sullivan, during a recent briefing, seemed surprised by Turner's press release, stating that he had planned to speak with the Congressman before any public announcement. When asked about the possibility of declassifying the information, Sullivan indicated that the administration has a history of declassifying information in the interest of national security. However, it appeared that they were not yet prepared to do so and had not anticipated facing questions about it during the briefing.

Members of Congress who have viewed the information in the SCIF (Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility) have expressed concern about the threat, although they are not allowed to disclose any specific details. The administration has not provided substantial information regarding the nature of the threat, focusing instead on other issues such as the need for foreign aid and the reauthorization of the FISA bill.

It is worth noting that Turner had previously condemned Russia's testing of a space-based anti-satellite weapon in 2020, suggesting a possible connection between that incident and the current threat he is warning about. However, without more information from the White House or Capitol Hill, it remains speculative.

The upcoming briefing with the gang of eight is expected to provide more clarity on the matter. There is a possibility that President Biden may also address questions regarding this national security threat in the coming days, as he had previously announced his intention to hold a press conference.

As the discussions unfold, it is crucial for the administration to assess the threat and engage with allies and partners to formulate an effective response. The security of space assets and national interests must be safeguarded, and collaboration with key stakeholders will be vital in achieving this goal.
