Florida Congressman Jared Moskowitz, a Democrat, revealed that the Margate Police Department alerted him to a potential plot on his life. The congressman, who recently secured re-election, was informed of the threat just a day before the election.
Moskowitz disclosed that the police had apprehended an individual near his residence who was found in possession of a rifle, a suppressor, and body armor. The suspect, identified as John Lapinski, a 41-year-old former felon, also had a manifesto containing antisemitic content and listed only Moskowitz's name as a target.
Rep. Matt Gaetz, a Republican from Florida, condemned the plot, emphasizing that violence against Moskowitz is unacceptable.
The Margate Police Department issued a press release confirming Lapinski's arrest for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and other related charges. The release mentioned that evidence uncovered during the investigation suggested Lapinski may have been planning a criminal act.
Authorities reached out to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for assistance in the ongoing investigation. The ATF has taken the lead in the case, and further details are being withheld to avoid compromising the inquiry.
Moskowitz expressed his gratitude to Susie Wiles following the announcement that she had been selected as President-elect Donald Trump's chief of staff.
