Both chambers of Congress have recently passed a resolution to revoke a methane fee rule implemented during the Biden administration, paving the way for President Donald Trump to sign off on the decision. The Senate voted 52-47 on Thursday to eliminate the methane fee requirement for select oil and natural gas companies, following the House's adoption of the resolution on Wednesday.
The methane fee was initially included in former President Joe Biden's Inflation Reduction Act, a significant climate legislation. This rule mandated the Environmental Protection Agency to impose fees on specific oil and natural gas companies based on the volume of methane emissions they release into the atmosphere.
Republican Senator John Hoeven from North Dakota, the sponsor of the resolution, has contended that this fee essentially functions as a 'natural gas tax.'
