Recent reports from eastern Congo's North Kivu and South Kivu provinces indicate that government forces have successfully recaptured several towns that had fallen to armed groups. This development comes amidst intensified fighting in the conflict-ridden region, where over 100 armed groups are vying for control of the mineral-rich territory near the border with Rwanda.
The Congolese army spokesperson revealed that some of the towns, including Ngungu, which is a key town in the Masisi territory near Goma, had been under rebel occupation for months. While these victories mark progress in the conflict, some Masisi villages, including the Masisi Center, remain under rebel control.
The army attributed the successful operations to a joint military effort led by commanders from both provinces. Towns such as Lumbishi, Ruzirantaka, Kamatale, Bitagata, and Kabingo have been reclaimed from the rebels, signaling a significant shift in the ongoing conflict.
