Confusion reigns as thousands of East Ayrshire households have bin days changed suddenly

Confusion surrounds the introduction of new bin days for thousands of East Ayrshire residents today.

Some of the 2,400 households facing changes suddenly found out their recycling day had been altered on East Ayrshire Council's website over the weekend.

For instance, some Kilmarnock residents that typically have a bin day on a Tuesday have been shifted to a Monday.

The calendar on the council's website states that changes take effect from today, but waste bosses have confirmed that this is not the case.

The new calendar will be implemented from next Monday, March 13 instead.

East Ayrshire Council has yet to officially notify residents of the change but chiefs insist that letters will be sent out to residents.

A number of residents have presented their kerbside recycling trolley and food waste container today but they will not be collected until tomorrow.

The council says that collection days are periodically reviewed to make pick-ups more balanced to take into account new houses.

A spokesperson for East Ayrshire Council said: "East Ayrshire Council can confirm that due to service changes 2400 households across East Ayrshire, which is around 4 per cent of households that receive a collection from the Council, will have a new collection day for recycling.

"Service changes are routine and are done periodically to balance collection runs, taking into account new build properties.

"The new arrangements will start on the week of Monday, March 13 and all affected households will be lettered by the council.

"If the new collection day is more than seven days after the previous collection day, extra recycling can be put out beside the recycling trolley."

The spokesperson added: "East Ayrshire Council can confirm that all collection routes are managed by in-cab technology and the new routes will require to be uploaded this week in advance of next week’s changes. This technology is linked to the online calendar and it may therefore show a change this week.

"The council would like to reiterate that no changes will be implemented until the week of Monday, March 13 and that all affected households will receive a letter advising of the changes."

Residents can check their bin days on East Ayrshire Council's website.
