Confirmed Champions League 2020/21 group stage pots as Chelsea, Liverpool and Man Utd await fate

Chelsea will discover who they will face in the 2020/21 Champions League group stages on Thursday.

The draw will take place in Nyon, Switzerland on Thursday afternoon, set to begin at 5pm (UK time). Originally, the draw was set to take place in Athens, although it has since been moved due to the coronavirus pandemic.

During the ceremony, UEFA will hand out awards to the best players and coaches from the 2019-20 edition of the competition.

Chelsea are the only London club in this season’s competition, making it only the second time in the last 19 seasons that the capital only has one representative in the competition.

Of the 32 places available, 26 spots have already been confirmed. The remaining six places will be determined in the play-off qualifiers taking place over Tuesday and Wednesday night.

As per competition rules, one team from each pot is draw into each group. Teams from the same country cannot be placed into the same group.

Ahead of the draw, here as a look at the teams that are in each pot on Thursday’s draw.

Pot 1

Bayern Munich (Germany), Sevilla (Spain), Real Madrid (Spain), Liverpool (England), Juventus (Italy), Paris Saint-Germain (France), Zenit St. Petersburg (Russia), Porto (Portgual)

This one of only two confirmed pots, with the other two pots yet to be officially confirmed due to the qualifiers that are still to take place.

Chelsea cannot face Liverpool due to both teams being from England.

Pot 2

Barcelona (Spain), Atletico Madrid (Spain), Manchester City (England), Manchester United (England), Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine), Borussia Dortmund (German), Chelsea (England), Ajax (Netherlands)

Chelsea cannot face any of the teams in Pot 2, which does see them avoid some big names.

Pot 3 (confirmed)

RB Leipzig (Germany), Inter Milan (Italy), Lazio (Italy), Atalanta (Italy), Dynamo Kyiv (Ukraine) or Gent (Belgium)

Only four of the teams have been confirmed into Pot 3 so far.

The winner of Dynamo Kyiv’s meeting with Gent will guarantee the winner a place in Pot 3.

Pot 4 (confirmed)

Borrusia Monchengladbach (Germany), Istanbul Basaksehir (Turkey), Rennes (France), Slavia Prague (Czech Republic) or FC Midtjylland (Denmark), Molde (Norway) or Ferencvaros (Hungary)

Borrusia Monchenglabach, Istanbul Basaksehir and Rennes are guaranteed to be in Pot 4.

The winners of Slavia Prague’s meeting with FC Midtjylland and Molde’s tie with Ferencvaros will be placed into Pot 4.

Pot 3 or 4

Lokomotiv Moscow (Russia), Marseille (France), Club Brugge (Belgium), Red Bull Salzburg (Austria) or Maccabi Tel Aviv (Israel), Olympiacos (Greece) or Omonia (Cyprus), Krasnodar (Russia) or PAOK (Greece)

The futures of Lokomotiv Moscow, Marseille and Club Brugge are based solely on which other teams qualify for the group stages.

Red Bull Salzburg will be placed into Pot 3 if they beat Maccabi Tel Aviv, with the Israeli side guaranteed to be put into Pot 3 if they progress.

Greek giants Olympiacos will also be put into Pot 3 if they beat Cypriot minnows, Omonia, who are the lowest-ranked side that can still qualify and would be put into Pot 4 if they progress.

Russian side Krasnodar will be put into Pot 3 with a win over PAOK, who would be placed in Pot 4 if they were to win.
