An influential travel magazine has picked out some of the best pubs and bars Glasgow has to offer, highlighting where tourists and travellers alike should be hitting up for a drink.
Condé Nast Traveller has been singing the praises of our fair wee city, offering their guide on everything from the best cocktail bars and gastropubs to the hippest music venues and local neighbourhood hangouts.
Aimed at travellers from around the world, travel writer Lucy Sweet wrote: "A night out scouring these Glasgow bars can be many things, but it will never be boring. After all, this is a town where a “wee swally” leads to fast friendships, dancing and emergency Irn-Bru in the morning."
And when it comes to her picks, there are some obvious entries that most would choose, including Sauchiehall Street institution Nice And Sleazy's ("nights out here are prone to being wild"), and Partick favourite The Lismore, ("at the weekends it attracts a rabble-rousing local crowd who are up for a good time").
However, there are a few very interesting choices, which we think really nail the variety of the places on offer around the city.
First up, is The Gate, which has been quietly carving out a niche as one of the best cocktail bars in the city, which Lucy describes as a "low-key gem" stating: "This is a cocktail bar that’s also a neighbourhood bar, with an easy-going atmosphere and a drinks selection that includes a mind-altering array of 160 whiskies."
And secondly, the always underrated (and unassuming) Allison Arms in the southside, a " local neighbourhood favourite" that Lucy describes as a "stalwart pub that everyone can agree on", thanks to its dog-friendly nature, its massive drinks selection and its riotous karaoke nights.
Finally, its the Laurieston, across from Bridge Street Underground, which always seems to miss out on these lists despite being one of the first names on most people's lips when asked for a great but underrated Glasgow bar.
The Condé Nast writer said: "The Laurieston is one of the most iconic Glasgow bars, decked out in Formica, with a countertop warmer serving hot pies and tatty paperback books lining the windowsills.
"Situated just to the south of the city centre, opposite Bridge Street subway station, in recent years the older regulars have made room for fancy-dress pub crawlers, art students and music fans on their way to the O2 Academy up the road. The result is a welcoming, rag-tag mix of old and new, presided over by no-nonsense owner John Clancy."
Other bars to get a mention include Stravaigin, Stereo and of course, West on the Green. Though we think it's a pretty spot on list we are sure there are many others you would add. Let us know in the comments below.
