A concrete worker who stabbed and beat his boss to death during a home visit to drop off a pay cheque has been jailed for life.
A Brisbane Supreme Court jury found Jordan Theodore Van Doorn, 31, guilty of murdering Khalil Ibrahim, 59, on October 8, 2021.
Mr Ibrahim's body was found with extensive injuries to his face, head and neck at Van Doorn's house in the eastern Brisbane suburb of Cannon Hill.
Van Doorn had fled after a physical altercation with Mr Ibrahim that involved stabbing him with a kitchen knife, hitting him with a wrench and leaving his body in a pool of blood just inside the front door.
Crown prosecutor Chris Cook told the jury that Van Doorn "unexpectedly and viciously" attacked Mr Ibrahim, who appeared to have had little chance to defend himself and did not inflict serious injuries on his attacker.
Mr Cook said Van Doorn had financial problems from his online gambling and likely attacked Mr Ibrahim after being told he would be sacked or have his pay docked for poor work performance.
Van Doorn's barrister Scott Lynch told the jury there was no issue that Mr Ibrahim was dead and that his client had killed him.
Mr Lynch said Van Doorn had defended himself after Mr Ibrahim launched a surprise attack on him, which could have been sexual in nature given voyeuristic photos were found on the boss's phone of his construction site workers without shirts on.
During the course of the eight-day trial the jury members were shown 360-degree photos of the crime scene and graphic body-worn camera footage of paramedics performing CPR on Mr Ibrahim.
After the jury returned its guilty verdict on Monday, Justice Tom Sullivan sentenced Van Doorn to life imprisonment with the 20-year non-parole period reduced by 272 days due to time served.
