Record signing makes 'concrete interest' claim over Liverpool transfer links

Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge has played down reports that Liverpool and Manchester City held a firm interest in signing him in recent transfer windows, insisting "not everything on the internet is true".

Berge, who made the move to Bramall Lane in January 2020, has been a name repeatedly linked with a move to Anfield, even prior to his days in English football when he was plying his trade at Belgium side Genk.

And despite an impressive first six months in Yorkshire following his club-record move to Sheffield United, the 24-year-old has stayed put at the Blades despite reported interest from a whole host of clubs; including Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea.

But speaking about the tentative rumours linking him with a return to the Premier League, the midfielder played down the credibility of such murmurs.

“There was a lot of interest, concrete interest, you weighed things up a bit, it had to work out for both the club and me, and it didn’t happen,” he told TV 2, while on international duty with Norway.

"It’s always nice to sit in a position and know that there were clubs that were very interested. There is nothing negative about clubs of that size being mentioned, but you shouldn’t put too much into it.

“It can be flared up by very little, and it is not necessarily always right, even if there were big and interesting clubs that were in the picture. Not everything on the internet is true.”

Berge could be in line for a return to the Premier League sooner than he thinks, without having to leave Bramall Lane, as Paul Heckingbottom's side currently lead the way in the Championship after a strong start to the season. But with his performances being key to the club boasting such a strong position at the first hiatus of the season, interest in Berge could grow in the coming weeks and months.
