Concerns raised over video showing youths cycling on roof of Dumfries primary school

Concerns have been raised after video footage emerged showing youths cycling on the roof of a Dumfries
school.

Louts have also been spotted playing football on the roof of Lincluden Primary and committing acts of vandalism.

In one video a youth is seen smashing a metal pole off of a gate to the school.

North West Dumfries councillor Graham Bell expressed concern at the behaviour of the youngsters.

He said: “It’s a severe health and safety risk. It’s a joke that they’ve managed to get up onto the roof.

“We’re facing an upsurge in antisocial behaviour in the area and I feel it’s spiralling out of control.”

Mr Bell pointed to similar incidents happening throughout the town during school holidays.

He added: “If you take into account last year the old convent had a lot of antisocial behaviour in the October school holidays and then Christmas and Easter.

“Now we’re faced with another outbreak in the summer at the new Lincluden Primary School.

“I’m concerned about this. There are other areas in North West Dumfries where private landlords are suffering from the same behaviour.

“I know the police and partner agencies are trying to resolve this. We’re living in a nanny state so it’s very difficult to prosecute juveniles for this kind of thing. But I’m concerned we’re seeing these incidents rise as the summer holidays are just starting.

“I know about 500 yards down the road there was another incident.

“I’m not sure if it’s the same youths but once you move them from one area they just move to create another hotspot elsewhere.”

The police and community and safety teams are increasing patrols and an upgraded CCTV system is being investigated by the council’s education estates team. A council spokesperson said: “The headteacher of Lincluden Primary has been working with Police Scotland to try and address the vandalism at the school.

“This is not just a school issue. This is a whole community issue.

“Lincluden Primary is an important part of the local community, so anyone who spots vandalism or inappropriate behaviour at the school should contact the police.”
