Concerns raised over increase in graffiti vandalism in parts of Perth city centre

Graffiti vandalism estimated to cost hundreds of pounds to clean and repair has blighted areas of Perth city centre.

Tayside Police noted at the end of last week that local officers had opened investigations and said they believe it to be the handiwork of the same person or persons.

The graffiti, Tayside Police confirmed, has appeared in numerous spots including Ropemakers Close, Matalan, the North Port Restaurant and, most recently, Thimblerow on January 8.

“Cleaning and repairs to the walls affected have been estimated to cost hundreds of pounds,” posted Tayside Police Division.

“If you have any information that could assist our enquiries, please call 101 or speak to any police officer. Our reference is CR/2942/23.”

A Perth and Kinross Council spokesperson told the PA that “graffiti adversely affects a community’s environment” and “can potentially lead to concerns about crime and other anti-social behaviours.”

The spokesperson went on to add: “We respond accordingly to any reports of graffiti we receive from residents, based on whether the graffiti is on public or private property.

“We will arrange for clean-ups where the graffiti is on for example public buildings, schools and road signs; and we can provide help to private property owners/managers to assist them with removing the graffiti.”

Perth city centre councillor Peter Barrett said: “Local residents have raised concerns with me regarding the increase in graffiti in the city centre.

“I have discussed these with the Local Area Commander. I am keen to re-emphasise his appeal to the public for any information which will assist in the detection of those responsible for the tags.

“Graffiti is a stain on our city centre which affects people’s perception of public safety in Perth.”
