Concerning footage shows seal floating on dumped mattress in Dublin Bay

An environmental activist group have shared shocking footage of a seal floating on a mattress dumped in Dublin Bay.

The heartbreaking video, which was shared by Flossie and the Beach Cleaners on Monday, shows the mammal perched on a double mattress as it floats in the bay. The rocks around the water can also be seen strewn with rubbish despite the group having only recently cleaned the area.

The beach cleaners, who were formed by Dublin teenager Flossie Donnelly, shared the video on social media in the hope it would shock people into action. They also vowed to return to clean up the area the following day.

They wrote: "We have been sent this clip…You sometimes wonder what kind of shocking video will work to make people take action! We cleaned these rocks by boat and land just over a week ago…we’re going back tomorrow at 2pm if anyone wants to help!"

Locals and other groups were "shocked" to see the concerning video. Others thanked Flossie and her group for cleaning the area again.

Gweebarra Conservation Group wrote: "That's a disgrace on the human race. Good of you to video it Flossie and clean it up."

Another person added: "So sad. The world is a mess."

In November, Flossie and her group of caring cleaners cleared more than 251kg - around a quarter of a tonne - of rubbish from Dublin's beaches. Anyone who wishes to volunteer to help the group keep the country's beaches clean can register their interest on their website.
